Bheeshma replied when Arjuna asked seeing him in tears on the arrow-bed when he was about to pass away "The miseries undergone by the Pandavas pass through my mind. This is done to teach the kaliyuga a lesson that never to seek power and position but to submit to the will of god in a completely resigned way so that you may be ever happy and unmoved".

The pandavas were happy when disasters fell thick upon them as they helped them to remember Krishna and call upon him. The lord rushes towards the bhaktha faster than the bhaktha rushes towards him. The lord will be more than mother or father and he will foster you from within you as he as saved and fostered so many saints who have placed faith in him. Welcome all the blows of fate, misfortunes and miseries as gold welcomes the crucible, the hammer and the anvil in order to get shaped into jewel. The cane welcomes the chopper, the crusher, the boiler, the pain, the sprayer and the dryer so that its sweetness may be preserved and used as sugar by all.

Vairaagyam is the ABC of saadhana (Spiritual effort). Vairaagyam must become strong enough to make you discard the bondage of the senses.  The deha (body) has to be used to ascend the ladder of the three gunas i.e., from thamas (inertia) to rajas (activism) and from rajas to sathwa (goodness) to reach the heights above that are beyond the ladder. The deha is the root of all the grief and disquiet that was acquired by means of the karma i.e., by means of the good and bad that was done in the previous birth. Karma is caused by attachment, hatred, affection and disaffection which are products of sheet ignorance of the unity of all creation. This ajnaana (ignorance) can be removed by Su-jnaana i.e., good knowledge.

Ajnaana can be removed by acknowledging the universality of God and the merging of your individuality in the Universal. This is done in three steps:

i. Practise the attitude of "I am yours" -- This first step is not so easy as it looks. The wave    (individual) has to discover and acknowledge that it belongs to the sea (Reality). The wave takes long time to recognise because its ego is so powerful and it will not permit it to be so humble as to bend before the sea. One should develop his mental attitude "I am yours. You are the Prabhu (Master). I am a dhaasa (servant). You are sovereign, I am bound". This is the attitude of maarjaala-kishora i.e., the attitude of kitten to its mother mewing plaintively for succor and sustenance removing all trace of the ego.

ii. Next step "You are mine" -- The wave demands the support of the sea as of right. The lord has to take the responsibility of guarding and guiding the individual and is bound to fulfill the need of the bhaktha. Surdaas said, "You are mine; I will not leave you; I shall imprison you in my heart; you shall not escape."

iii. Final step "You are I" -- I have no separate individuality. There is no duality. I am the image of the Reality.

Just a few minutes of thought will convince anyone of the hollowness of earthly riches of fame or happiness. Everyone praises you when you are affluent, many will claim kinship with the dead person if corpse had a few jewels on it, hundreds of frogs croak all round when the tank is full. Those who gave up, renounced, sought the more difficult road of God-realisation instead of the easier path of world-realisation are honoured in this world but not who struggle to achieve paltry fame by devious means.
